It's spring time with summer peering around the corner. For many, this is a time where they strive to get back in shape for the nicer weather. For others, this is a time they get down on themselves for not being in shape. Either way, if you are are wanting to get back in shape in a hurry I have 5 tips to help with that process. There are no silver bullets when it comes to you trying to get back in shape. So follow along in this post and put these tips to use, and before you know it, you will be feeling better about yourself in no time.
Don't get out of shape! Yes, I am being one of those “I told you so people” right now. But its true. If you are consistent and maintain your desired physique all year long there is no need to get back in shape because you are always in shape. So if you have a wedding, reunion, or any event around the corner the most you would need to do is tighten up your diet and workout regimen a bit and be ready to go. This tip eliminates the yo-yo cycle of you trying to get back in shape. You might be reading this thinking “great, that is no help at all” and I get that. But it is a valid tip. Hearing this for some may do nothing for them, while others may think long term versus short term.
You need to define what you mean by “get back in shape.” It is subjective to everyone, for some it may be to drop a pant size, for others it may be to lose x amount of pounds, and even for others it may be to run a half marathon. Defining what it truly means to “get back in shape” will then set you up to achieve that. Having a broad definition will only increase the probability of you not working towards a specific goal which in turn results in you spinning your wheels and trying various ways to get back in shape. Pinpoint what it will look like for you to be in shape, then formulate tactical measures to get there.
Depending on your definition this tip might change a bit. But overall, if you want to get back in shape your diet is the bulk of you getting there. Make sure to avoid processed foods of all kinds, load up in veggies, fruits (apple, and berries mostly) nuts, lean meats, and healthy fats. You won't get the results you desire with a trash can diet. Stick to the outside sections of the grocery store, and steer away from the junk food. I know this may seem obvious and you have heard it before, but it is fundamental for anyone to get back in shape and stay there.
This tip is also dependent on how you define to "get back in shape". But you need to move your body no matter what. My advice is interval cardio and bodyweight workout circuits. All of these combined will increase the rate of fat burning while developing lean muscle. I would suggest 6 days a week of intense working out to get back in shape quickly. If you look through many posts on my blog you will find many different types of workouts. You need to push yourself, and at the early stages of trying to get back in shape it may be hard. Focus on the goal/target you set in tip #2 and strive towards that each day.
You must get quality sleep, no excuses. If you truly want to get back in shape and stay there, sleep is vital. Without proper sleep (7-8 hours a night) your body cannot and will not fully repair itself. If you are busting your butt, eating right, and working out to get back in shape but are not sleeping well, it is equivalent to a vicious match of tug a war. Your growth and repair hormones kick in at night (from about 10 pm to 3 am), and if you are still awake or not sleeping well, in inhibits these vital growth and repair hormones to actually kick in.
I am a huge advocate of sustainability. Find what will work for you for the long haul and avoid short term fixes. Make sure whatever you do has variety, without it your body will become accustomed to your routines and you will plateau. Eat clean, sleep, and enjoy the process and focus on the bright spots, not the challenging difficult times. I hope that if you are trying to get back in shape you do so and stay in shape for the long haul
